CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL FEMALE RIDE DAY 2021
Every year on the first weekend of May, women from over 120 countries worldwide celebrate International Female Ride Day, where female motorcyclists come together to ride, meet and share their mutual passion of the motorcycle industry.
This year, Merla Moto was proud to get involved and put on an event for Sydney’s female rider community, as well as our male counterparts to support our ladies on the day. Held at our headquarters in Alexandria, we decided to organise a ride out to build awareness of female motorcyclists and encourage more women to get out and ride.
INTERNATIONAL FEMALE RIDE DAY AT BLACKBIRD HQ
We originally set out to create a morning for our local female riders, hoping to get around 20 people show up for a fun group ride out. We invited female motorcyclists around Sydney to come together at Blackbird Headquarters (Alexandria, NSW) to meet and greet, head out for a ride then return back to our HQ in Alexandria where there will be a food truck with coffee and brunch available to purchase, along with prizes and exclusive offers on the day.
Well, turns out there were A LOT more than 20 women keen to head out for a ride and meet their fellow moto femmes around Sydney on IFRD. With over 500 Facebook Event Responses, 140 website registrations and enquiries from motorcycle publications, photographers and industry influencers interested to get involved on the day, we were absolutely overwhelmed (in a good way!) with the response from the local community. An extra food truck was arranged, the local council were notified and our team realised this event was no longer the humble meet-up we originally planned for!
WHO GOT INVOLVED?
Sydney’s female motorcyclists were all invited on Saturday 1st May to Blackbird HQ at 8am, ready to ride out at 8:30am out to Wattle Grove and back. The gents of Sydney were also invited to come on the day and support our female riders and join in on the ride too! There were stalls on the day for women to try on our gear, as well as Forcite Helmets offering ladies to try out the helmets and join their waitlist, and Girl Torque CC offering lessons for women riders looking to improve their skills.
Delicious crepes, fresh coffee and mouthwatering breakfast rolls were served up all morning thanks to the crews behind YNOT Crepes and Emu’s Food Truck. A big shoutout to our DJ Sam Barlow for supplying the tunes all morning, and Caleb Thornton-Shaw for capturing the day on camera.

THANKS FOR COMING TO IFRD!
A HUGE thank you to all the women who participated in Blackbird’s IFRD event – the vibes were incredible, and we’re incredibly honoured to have over 130 riders rock up to our premises to ride out, meet other female riders and celebrate women on bikes! Also a special thanks to Mark Hawwa founder of Distinguished Gentlemen’s Ride for promoting the day and coming to support our women riders, Fabienne from Girl Torque for leading the ride on the day and Surfside Motorcycle Garage for lending us one of their amazing Royal Enfield Meteors to ride on the day!
Also a BIG thank you to the team behind Workit Spaces who supported the day’s operations, and helped run the event with us – we can’t wait to host another one next year!
